Folate status in women of reproductive age as basis of neural tube defect risk assessment

In assessing the global risk of neural tube defects (NTDs), it is critical to obtain reliable data on the folate status of women of reproductive age, and the World Health Organization recently recommended that optimal red blood cell folate concentration be used as the sole indicator of NTD risk. This paper discusses how best to apply this guidance to harmonize assays across countries and time to generate reliable folate status data to assess NTD risk and to plan interventions for women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries.
