Journal Overview
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences is an international science journal published bi-monthly as themed special issues in many areas of science, though predominantly the biological sciences. Each of twenty-four annual issues presents Original Research Articles and/or commissioned Review, Commentary, and Perspective Articles. Ann NY Acad Sci is a hybrid journal available in over 80 countries, is rigorously peer-reviewed, and is ranked among the top multidisciplinary journals worldwide.

Precision medicine, agriculture, and genome editing: science and ethics
-  13 November 2019
Abstract
This paper describes the talks presented in 2018 at the “Precision Medicine and Genome Editing: Science and Ethics” workshop held at the Third International Conference on One Medicine One Science (iCOMOS). The talks highlighted the novel, interdisciplinary approaches through which advanced genome‐editing techniques are affecting biomedical research in human genetic disorders, infectious disease, environmental science, agriculture, pharmacogenomics, and bioethics.

Abstract
In the current study, we investigated the correlation of matrix stiffness (as a mechanical property of liver tissue) with the expression levels of tafazzin (as a possible mechanotransducer), and Indian hedgehog and osteopontin (both regarded as profibrogenic mediators) in patients with NASH‐, hepatitis B virus (HBV)‐, hepatitis C virus (HCV)‐, autoimmune hepatitis (AIH)‐, primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)‐, and alcohol‐related cirrhosis.

Abstract
The specific aim of this research prioritization exercise was to inform the direction of research and investments needed to support the implementation of multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) interventions for pregnant women in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMIC) using the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative methodology. This exercise prioritized 35 discrete research questions that merit serious consideration for the potential of MMS during pregnancy to be optimized in LMIC.

Open accessHypothermic and cryogenic preservation of tissue‐engineered human bone
-  31 October 2019
Abstract
To allow distribution and banking of tissue‐engineered products, preservation methods that do not compromise tissue properties are needed. This study compared the effects of a hypothermic and a cryogenic preservation method on the survival, quality, and function of tissue‐engineered human bone and it found that the hypothermic method is better for the preservation and distribution of high‐quality tissue‐engineered bone grafts.

Abstract
Using extracellular products of Aeromonas veronii TH0426 strain closely associated with its virulence factors and pathogenicity, we determined, from nine A. veronii strains isolated from different sources, that the common protein‐coding gene hisJ is associated with pathogenesis. To clarify the function of hisJ, we constructed ∆hisJ (hisJ deleted) and C‐hisJ (hisJ complemented) strains and performed preliminary analyses of their effects on pathogenicity. Our study provides a theoretical basis for elucidating the pathogenesis of A. veronii TH0426.
